“…There's a moral and an ethical aspect to this, as well…I think the most important thing that we can do is make sure that we put in a bunch of financial regulatory mechanisms to prevent companies like an AIG holding the rest of us hostage. Because that's –- that's the real problem….”

- President Barack Obama, speaking on the AIG corporate bailout controversy withTalk Show Host Jay Leno, March 19, 2009

It is noteworthy that President Obama chose to speak of “moral and ethical concerns” during his appearance on the “Tonight Show” last week.

The President is correct. The relationship between the AIG Corporation and the United States Federal Government is fraught with serious ethical and moral dilemmas. Yet, despite the President’s expressed “concerns,” he is mostly avoiding the many actual dilemmas entailed in this mess, while at the same time creating more ethical dilemmas for the United States with his own behavior.

Every tax-paying U.S. citizen became directly entangled in the AIG Corporation during the Fall of 2008, before Obama was President. At that time, the AIG Corporation had managed itself into disaster and came looking to the government for “help,” and in response, the previous Congress and President Bush infused the private corporation with public money.

Was it the right thing to do? That’s debatable. But we know this much: with the stroke of Bush’s pen, every American tax payer became not a “stockholder,” but a “stakeholder” in AIG - - that is, because “our money,” collectively speaking, had been given to the company, we all, collectively speaking, have a direct “stake” in the company’s success.

But that was last September. Since then there have been three additional infusions of our money into the AIG Corporation, the most recent one happening last month at the hand of President Obama. And here lies a moral dilemma that is being ignored: President Obama willingly accepted donations from AIG to his presidential campaign last year, and now this year he has handed-over billions of our tax dollars to the company.

Was it a “quid pro quo,” “return the favor” move from Obama? The situation certainly entails a conflict of interests. Given this, and given his recent desire to play the “give the money back” game, President Obama needs to start by giving back to AIG the money they gave him for his campaign. Sadly, there is no evidence that President Obama has any intention or desire to resolve this ethical dilemma. Continued...

My little fantasy :)
Kudos to the brilliant idea of demanding that Obumma whip out his birth certificate (without giving him the opportunity to conjure up a fake one) and prove that he is a natural born US citizen! I can't believe that this refusal to fess up has been tolerated for so long!
So many times, I hear of Obummas' reliance on not one, but TWO teleprompters every single time he speaks - which gives me a delicious idea; picture it - the anointed one strolls confidently up to the podium to deliver yet another sermon to what he imagines a throng of Americans of every stripe ready to hang upon his every word. After graciously acknowleging his adoring audience, he offers up a tidbit of his great wisdom and gentle humor, and invites his loyal followers to ask whatever they will, certain that he will be able to quickly provide the perfect response. Immediately after the initial question, his eyes are focusing expectantly upon one of the teleprompters that is supposed to be feeding him the absolute perfect answer......nothing! Just a black monitor...nothing!! Quickly, his eyes turn to the second teleprompter - backup; even if one blank screen happened, surely it wouldn't be BOTH - that would be impossible - too many people to take care of things, right? But again the screen is blank....BLANK! Beads of sweat begin to appear on his brow, the great leaders' eyes bright with fear! What to say....what was the question?? Why isn't anybody DOING something??
Can you imagine such a moment? Frankly, I would PAY to see that one! Thanks, all, for allowing me to vent my little fantasy - have a nice day! :)

the agenda and bail oout

Could you also explain why it is wrong for wealthy executives receiving government bailout money to receive bonuses while it is perfectly acceptable for Senators and Legislators to receive a raise? After all, both the corporate financial institutions receiving bailout money and the federal government are receiving money extracted from the taxpaying citizens. Both the Wall Street beneficiaries and the government were run by incompetent executives whose policies allowed their institutions to go into massive debt and near bankruptcy. Both the plutocrats of Manhattan and the politicians in Washington governed institutions that were once vibrant and solvent but squandered unwisely and profligately until their organizations were near bankruptcy and insolvency. So why criticize any CFO or CEO for perks and privileges when Congress has also shown itself inept and financially reckless, yet rewarded itself with more perks, privileges and a pay raise?
